▪︎ From Nurse to Business Owner: Building and Marketing Your LNC Business

Becoming a Legal Nurse Consultant requires more than knowing how to review medical records and analyze cases. If you plan to work independently, you are also becoming a business owner. That means deciding how to structure your business, whether you need an EIN, fictitious business name or local business license, what insurance you should carry, how you will bill clients, and how you will protect confidential information. These may not be the most exciting parts of becoming an LNC, but getting them right helps establish you as a professional consultant from the beginning.

Finding work also requires knowing where and how to look. New LNCs often make the mistake of searching only for jobs titled “Legal Nurse Consultant.” In reality, many opportunities appear under completely different titles. There are major employment sites offering nurse consulting, medical record review, insurance, government, remote, and contract positions. There are also specialized legal directories that allow you to research attorneys and law firms by practice area and location. Knowing which sites to use—and the specific search terms that uncover LNC-related opportunities—can make a significant difference.

Independent LNCs should also remember that they are often looking for clients rather than jobs. Attorneys handling medical malpractice, personal injury, nursing home, elder abuse, insurance defense, and other medically complex cases may need an LNC but never advertise for one. Successful marketing therefore includes researching appropriate attorneys, developing professional marketing materials, writing effective introductory letters or emails, following up, and demonstrating how your nursing knowledge can save the attorney time and help identify important medical issues.

Networking can be equally important. Other LNCs, nurse and physician experts, attorneys, claims professionals, and professional organizations can become valuable sources of referrals and subcontracting opportunities. National and regional LNC organizations, bar associations, legal conferences, professional groups, and online networking platforms provide opportunities to develop these relationships. Other LNCs are not necessarily your competitors—they may become some of your best referral sources.

It is also important to understand that marketing an LNC practice is different from marketing yourself as a testifying nurse expert witness. A behind-the-scenes LNC markets services and the value they provide to the attorney. A testifying expert must emphasize clinical expertise, qualifications, objectivity, and credibility. Marketing as an expert-witness can sometimes backfire if opposing counsel attempts to portray the nurse as a professional witness or “hired gun.” We tell you how to walk that line.

Our **How to Launch Your LNC Business: From Business Setup to Finding Jobs, Clients, and Consulting Opportunities** Course takes business concepts and breaks them down to specific websites and how to obtain each of the business documents you’ll need. It also tells you where to find the most LNC jobs, which attorney directories and employment sites are most useful, the exact search terms to use, how to identify law firms that may need your services, how to prepare marketing letters and materials, where to find subcontracting opportunities, how to network effectively, and how expert-witness marketing differs from consulting. Unlike other LNC courses that simply telling you to “market yourself,” our Course provides set-by-step guidance and resources to help you understand exactly where to look, whom to contact, and how to get started!
